Tandem

Just between us

Life. Shared. Tended to.

The most important
thing in your life
are your people.

Both live in one place — the relationships that you are already in. Tandem makes your relationships visible.

You track your steps, your sleep and your spending. Your relationships — the most important investments of your life — are the things you don’t capture. Tandem gives you and your partner, and you and your close friend(s), a record of each relationship and a way to tend to it.

Two people · one private space · no feed, no audience

A tandem bicycle with a basket of hearts

Two people, a path together. What you put in is what you get out.

The human truth

Relationships are invisible while you are inside of them.Good weeks and hard weeks blur together, and memory edits them generously.

Everyone wants the same two things: to remember what their life was actually like, and to feel a little closer than they did last year. Both of them live in one place — the relationships you are already in.

Tandem makes your relationships visible and memorable: a number or two a day, a line of your own words, the photos you would otherwise lose in a camera roll.

It is not therapy homework. It is a place for memory and a path ahead, kept by two people who would rather tend it on purpose.

間

人間

ningen — a human being

The Japanese word for a human being is written with two characters: a person, and the space between them.

Watsuji Tetsurō, the twentieth-century Japanese philosopher, made that spelling the ground of his entire ethics. A self is not a finished thing that then goes out and has relationships. The between is where a person actually exists — and where a life is either remembered or lost.

Tandem is a notebook for the between.

Choose Tandem for your relationship partner, or Tandem friend for your close friends.

Every evening

Three small things.
Five minutes.

  • 01

    Time and quality

How much time you actually shared today, and how good it felt. Hours on their own mean nothing; hours with attention in them mean everything.

  • 02

    Your day, one to ten

Five quick questions about how you showed up: connection, communication, fun, support, and how you carried the stress you were already carrying.

Use the pre-loaded quick questions or write your own — you and your partner agree the wording together, so the two numbers still mean the same thing.

  • 03

    Two from the house

Two questions a day, rotating through the nine floors of the Sound Relationship House — Dr John Gottman's research-backed model of what a relationship stands on.

Memories

Remember every day, forever.

Another three things that are optional.

The line you each wrote, laid out by week and by month, sitting on the day it happened with the photo that belonged to it. Read a Tuesday in March and you are back in it — which is the entire point.

Nothing in this view asks you a question. It is the part of Tandem that simply remembers, for both of you at once.

All three skippable. Your words and photos stay editable whenever you like; the day’s numbers close at midnight, so yesterday stays exactly the way it was.

04

A way to remember today, forever

We all want the day to have been worth remembering, not just got through. Write one thing — big or small, about them or not — and Tandem tells you honestly how likely it is to last.

“I had a great lunch” fades before the week is out. “That amazing Burmese sandwich by the water” does not.

A photo memory of today

One image, pinned to the day it belongs to, so the year ends up being more than a camera roll.

06

A note of gratitude

The thing you would have said anyway, if you had thought to say it. It goes to your partner, and it stays in the record.

A word on the house

Seven floors,
two walls.

Dr John Gottman's model is not a theory about compatibility. It is a description of what couples who stay together actually do, day by day, in small unglamorous ways — built from more than forty years observing thousands of couples, and the same framework couples therapists use to see what is working and what is quietly eroding.

The house has nine parts. Seven floors: knowing what is going on in your partner's world, letting them know you like them, turning towards them when they reach out, assuming the best, handling friction gently, cheering on their hopes, and building a life that feels like “us”. Trust and commitment are the two load-bearing walls everything else hangs on.

Tandem asks about it two questions at a time, rotating through all nine, so the whole house fills itself in over a few weeks rather than in one difficult conversation. Because you both answer the same ones, you see the gap before it widens.

Finally, a community if you want one

Tandem is a private room first. But there is quiet value in knowing how other couples are doing on the same questions — so once twenty-five couples have agreed to take part, the five benchmark questions become a benchmark: what people actually report, not what a book says they should.

Benchmark

Where you sit

“Do you turn towards each other when one of you reaches out?” — answered by 38 couples so far. Twenty-five is where the comparison begins.

Shared questions

What couples ask each other

Any question you write yourself can be put to the community anonymously. What comes back is a number and a spread, never a name.

Only if you opt in

Your answers join the comparison only after you say so, and the count only includes people who did. Leaving takes it back.

Never your name

Other couples see a number and a spread, never who said what. Nothing about you is attached to a result.

Your own questions, if you like

The questions you write yourself can be put to other couples anonymously — a way to ask the thing you have been wondering.

Private by design

Just between us.

One couple at a time, two people in the space, no feed and nothing public. Your ratings only reach each other once you have both been checking in for a week — so the first days belong to you, and the comparison starts from a real habit rather than a single evening.
